Wine in Cyprus

Cyprus is an eastern Mediterranean island located south of Turkey and west of Syria and Lebanon. Viticulture on the island dates back thousands of years and is among the oldest continuous wine traditions in Europe. The climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, while higher elevations in the Troodos Mountains provide cooler conditions for balanced grape development.

Wine production is concentrated mainly in hillside and mountainous areas, where altitude moderates heat and helps preserve acidity. The island operates under PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) systems that regulate production zones and quality standards.

Cyprus is known for indigenous grape varieties such as Xynisteri (white) and Mavro (red), as well as Maratheftiko, which produces more structured red wines. The island is also famous for Commandaria, a historic sweet wine produced from sun-dried grapes and recognized as one of the world's oldest named wines. In addition to traditional varieties, international grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay are cultivated. Wines range from dry whites and reds to sweet and fortified styles, reflecting both ancient tradition and modern production methods.
