Pico Island Wine Landscape

Pico Island is part of the Azores archipelago in the North Atlantic and an autonomous region of Portugal. Wine production developed under harsh volcanic and maritime conditions, using small basalt stone enclosures (currais) to protect vines from wind and salt while retaining heat. Madalena has historically been the main centre of production and export, while Entre Pedras and Sao Mateus reflect traditional small-scale vineyard areas. Lajes do Pico functioned primarily as a maritime town. Modern wineries operate within historic vineyard zones, emphasizing volcanic soils and minimal intervention, with vineyard boundaries often following lava flows rather than administrative lines.
