Slovakia is located in Central Europe, bordered by the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, Poland, and Ukraine. Viticulture is concentrated mainly in the southern parts of the country, where warmer conditions and river valleys provide suitable growing environments.
Slovak wine production is organized into six main wine regions: Malokarpatska (Little Carpathian), Juznoslovenska (Southern Slovakia), Nitrianska (Nitra), Stredoslovenska (Central Slovakia), Vychodoslovenska (Eastern Slovakia), and the Slovak portion of Tokaj. The Little Carpathian region near Bratislava is historically significant, while Tokaj in the southeast is known for sweet wines made from botrytized grapes.
Slovakia produces both white and red wines, with important varieties including Rizling Rynsky (Riesling), Veltlinske Zelene (Gruner Veltliner), Frankovka Modra (Blaufrankisch), Rulandske Sede (Pinot Gris), and Furmint in Tokaj. Wines are predominantly dry, with notable sweet styles in Tokaj and a strong emphasis on regional character.
