Wine in Ukraine

Ukraine is located in Eastern Europe, bordered by Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Belarus, Russia, and the Black Sea. Viticulture has deep roots in the country, particularly in the southern regions where warmer conditions, steppe climates, and maritime influence support grape growing.

Wine production is concentrated mainly in Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Zakarpattia (Transcarpathia), and Crimea. Southern mainland areas near the Black Sea favor dry table wines, while Zakarpattia benefits from sheltered valleys and Carpathian foothills. Crimea has historically been important for both still and fortified wines.

Ukraine grows a mix of international and regional grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Aligote, alongside local and regional grapes such as Odesa Black, Telti-Kuruk, and Sukholimansky White. Wines are predominantly dry, with some fortified and sparkling styles, and production increasingly emphasizes quality and regional expression.
